Stay and transfer decisions

Safari accommodation and transport: what to compare

Compare the overnight base and the journey together. A well-located room can save repeated driving, while a flight can remove a long transfer but introduce baggage and connection limits. Comfort labels alone do not describe either tradeoff.

Tent, camp, lodge and hotel are not comfort ratings

A camping itinerary may use a portable tent and shared facilities. A permanent tented camp may provide a bed and an en-suite bathroom beneath canvas. A lodge often uses permanent buildings, while a town hotel can be useful before or between safari stages. Confirm the actual product rather than assuming a tent is basic or a lodge is luxurious.

Ask about bathroom privacy, hot-water arrangements, ventilation or heating where relevant, noise and distance to dining. Property facilities shown online describe the property; your quotation must identify the room category and meal plan being booked.

Read the gate and activity geography

An inside-park stay can reduce some gate transfers; an outside base may fit the budget or provide convenient onward access. Neither is always preferable. Ask which entrance is used, when access is permitted and which wildlife area the day will explore.

A property described as “Mara,” “Serengeti” or “Bwindi” may be far from the activity you intend. For migration, identify the seasonal sector. For a gorilla trek, match accommodation to the confirmed briefing point. For a crater visit, understand the distinction between a highland base and a stay on the rim.

Make personal requirements measurable

Ask for a floor plan or current photographs when room configuration matters. Connecting doors, an extra bed and a separate nearby tent are different arrangements. If access is important, request step counts, path surfaces, bathroom details and vehicle boarding arrangements.

Check electricity and charging times, socket needs and backup provision for essential devices. Wi-Fi availability is not a speed or reliability guarantee. If work calls are essential, plan them around a confirmed connection rather than a remote camp’s general facilities list.

  • Family needs: bed layout, bathroom, night escorts and pool supervision.
  • Dietary needs: ingredients, cross-contact process and packed-meal options.
  • Access needs: vehicle steps, room route, shower access and assistance actually available.
  • Camera needs: secure storage, charging schedule and space in the vehicle.

Road travel: plan the day, not only the distance

Safari transport is by 4×4 Land Cruiser, with private or shared use specified for the selected itinerary. Road conditions, gate procedures, town traffic, weather and comfort stops affect the day. A precise-looking journey time should not be treated as an arrival promise.

Ask which transfers are mostly travel and which include useful game viewing. Tell the operator about motion sickness, back discomfort or frequent-break needs before the route is final. It is easier to adjust a route early than to shorten a long road day after departure.

Flights: check the complete chain

A fly-in journey still needs an airport or airstrip transfer, check-in, baggage handling and onward collection. Ask for the actual carrier’s weight, size and bag-type limits for each sector; do not rely on a universal safari-flight allowance.

Identify who operates the game drives at the destination and whether they are shared. If flights are on separate tickets, clarify the time allowed for a connection and who handles changes after disruption. Compare the full door-to-door plan with the road alternative.

What a complete confirmation should show

The written proposal should list each property or explain the selection process, room category, sharing arrangement, meals, nights, transfers, park activities and exclusions. Accommodation is selected and confirmed in your written proposal where the itinerary does not fix it.

An official hotel link helps you research facilities. It does not mean Family owns the property, guarantees availability or has a formal partnership. Ask what alternatives would be offered if the first choice cannot be confirmed.

Questions travellers ask

Is a permanent tented camp the same as a camping safari?
No. Compare beds, bathrooms, power and services explicitly. The material of the walls does not establish the level of comfort.
Are game drives private when I book a fly-in trip?
Not automatically. Flight access and vehicle exclusivity are separate parts of the booking. Ask whether each drive is private or shared.
Can a lodge guarantee reliable Wi-Fi and all-night power?
Only rely on a specific current confirmation for your needs. Ask about power schedules, backup systems and the connection available in your room or shared areas.
