5 Days Maasai Mara Fly-In Luxury Safari

5 days / 4 nights·From $4,890 pp·Easy·Luxury · Honeymoon · Photography

Overview

Our most-booked luxury fly-in safari and the gold standard for the Maasai Mara experience. Four nights in a Governor's Camp-class luxury tented camp on the Mara River, charter flights in each direction from Wilson Airport, open-sided 4x4 game viewers (instead of windowed minivans), and access to private conservancies adjoining the reserve where vehicle numbers are strictly controlled.

The luxury tented camps on this trip are the legendary names of the Mara — Governor's Camp, Mara Plains, Sentinel Mara — vast suites under canvas with claw-foot baths, private river decks, and butler service. The cuisine is exceptional: pan-seared beef fillet under candlelight in the bush, champagne breakfasts on the savanna after a sunrise balloon flight, sundowners on a private kopje with twenty-mile views.

The wildlife experience matches the accommodation. With private conservancy access, off-road driving (illegal in the main reserve), night drives and walking safaris, you can spend an hour with a single leopard family without ever seeing another vehicle. The most rewarding way to do the Mara, period.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1

Wilson Airport → Maasai Mara (luxury camp)

    Nairobi → Maasai Mara

Transfer to Wilson Airport in Nairobi for your scheduled morning flight to the Maasai Mara — a 45-minute hop in a Cessna 208 Caravan with spectacular Rift Valley views. Your safari guide collects you in an open-sided 4x4 game viewer at the airstrip and game drives begin immediately on the way to camp. Check in at your luxury tented camp — vast suites under canvas with claw-foot baths, private decks over the river and butler service. Long lunch on the camp deck, then an afternoon game drive on the Mara plains. Sundowners on a granite kopje, dinner of pan-seared beef fillet under candlelight in the bush, and overnight in your suite, lulled by hippos in the river below.

Meals: L, D · Stay: Governor's Camp, Mara Plains or Sentinel Mara Camp

  2. 2

Maasai Mara — Full day private conservancy

    Mara conservancies

A full Mara day at your own pace. Choose between a sunrise hot-air balloon safari (additional, recommended) ending with champagne breakfast cooked on the savanna, a guided bush walk with an armed Maasai ranger to track wildlife on foot, or a private vehicle full-day game drive with picnic lunch in the bush. Most guests do all three across two days. The luxury camps along the Mara River have access to private conservancies adjoining the reserve where vehicle numbers are strictly controlled — you might have a leopard sighting entirely to yourselves. Sundowners on a private kopje, candlelit dinner in a bush clearing under the stars, and overnight at your luxury tented camp.

    Meals: B, L, D · Stay: Same as Day 1

  3. 3

Maasai Mara — Full day game drives

    Maasai Mara

Today belongs to the Mara. After early coffee, head out at 6am for the dawn game drive when the big cats are still hunting — the diamond hours when leopards descend from sausage trees and lions finish their kills. You return to the lodge around 10am for a full breakfast and a few hours of leisure: swimming pool, spa treatment, a lazy verandah read or laundry turnaround. After lunch, set out again at 4pm for the golden-hour drive. Between July and October your guide will track radio reports of wildebeest crossings at the Mara River, where Nile crocodiles wait — one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles on Earth. An optional sunrise hot-air balloon safari can be arranged at $450 per person, ending with a champagne bush breakfast cooked beside your landing site. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

    Meals: B, L, D · Stay: Same as Day 1

  4. 4

Maasai Mara — Full day game drives

    Maasai Mara

A second full Mara day allows you to explore corners of the reserve missed yesterday — the Mara Triangle in the west, the Talek River area, or Musiara Marsh where the legendary Marsh Pride lives. Mid-morning, your guide can arrange an authentic visit to a Maasai manyatta where you are welcomed with the traditional adumu jumping dance, learn how the Maasai light fire by friction, and tour the dung-and-stick houses. The visit fee directly supports the community. Return to the lodge for lunch, then a final golden afternoon drive — many travelers see their best wildlife on this fifth-day drive when guides know exactly where the prides have settled. Dinner and overnight under a Mara sky that holds more stars than you have ever seen, the distant whoop of hyena drifting across the plains.

    Meals: B, L, D · Stay: Same as Day 1

  5. 5

    Maasai Mara → Wilson Airport

    Maasai Mara → Nairobi

A final game drive in your destination park, breakfast at the camp, and transfer to the airstrip for your scheduled flight to Wilson Airport in Nairobi. On arrival, transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your departing international flight, or to your Nairobi hotel for a Zanzibar or Mount Kenya extension. End of safari — the luxury fly-in circuit is the fastest, most comfortable way to see Kenya's iconic wildlife regions, and the open 4x4 game viewers, private conservancies and exceptional camps make every minute count.
