7 Days Kenya Honeymoon — Maasai Mara Game Drives & Diani Beach Sunsets

7 days / 6 nights·From $2,890 pp·Easy·Honeymoon

Overview

This 7-day Kenya honeymoon combines three nights in the legendary Maasai Mara with three nights at a beachfront resort in Diani — Kenya's most romantic shoreline, a 17-kilometer crescent of powder-white sand on the south coast. Designed exclusively for couples, the itinerary is paced around romance: private 4x4 vehicles (no shared safaris), candlelit bush dinners, sundowner cocktails on Mara hilltops, honeymoon-suite upgrades at every property, and rose petals on arrival. The Maasai Mara delivers what every couple comes to Africa for — Big Five wildlife, hot-air balloon sunrises with champagne breakfasts in the bush, and the great migration in season.

The transition from bush to beach is by air rather than road — a 1-hour scheduled flight from the Mara airstrip back to Wilson Airport, then a 1-hour Kenya Airways or Jambojet flight to Mombasa, then a 1-hour scenic drive south down the coast to Diani. By keeping every transfer on the same day and out of the road, you preserve your honeymoon for what matters: each other, sundowners, the Indian Ocean, and a complete absence of email. Diani Beach itself is consistently ranked Africa's best beach by World Travel Awards, with reefs offshore that take the surf and create absolutely calm swimming water at the shoreline.

The beach portion balances activity with deep relaxation. One day combines a Wasini Island dhow cruise with dolphin spotting and snorkeling in the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park (a turtle-and-reef-fish nirvana in protected coral atolls). One day is yours alone — beach, spa, sundowners, candlelit dinner. The final morning is a slow check-out and unhurried transfer to Mombasa Moi International Airport for an evening departure home. Honeymoons should feel like the start of something, not a frantic checklist — this itinerary is built for that exact pace.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1

    Fly into the Mara

Nairobi → fly to Maasai Mara

After your international arrival into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, our representative meets you and transfers you the 30 minutes to Wilson Airport for an 11am scheduled SafariLink or AirKenya flight to the Maasai Mara — a 45-minute hop with an unforgettable view of the Great Rift Valley below. You're met at the Mara airstrip by your KPSGA-certified driver-guide and the private 4x4 Land Cruiser that will be yours for the bush portion. Game-drive transfer to your honeymoon lodge, arriving in time for a late lunch and a chance to settle into your honeymoon suite (rose-petal turn-down, sparkling wine on the deck). The afternoon game drive starts at 4pm with sundowners on a Mara hilltop — a private gin-and-tonic with the sun setting over the savanna. Dinner at the lodge, lions calling in the dark, your honeymoon officially begun.

  2. 2

Sunrise balloon and a romantic bush breakfast

    Maasai Mara

An optional sunrise hot-air balloon safari (US$550pp, strongly recommended for honeymoons) lifts off at dawn for a one-hour drift over the Mara plains as the sun comes up — landing in the bush for a champagne breakfast prepared by the camp staff (linen tablecloth, silver service, cooked-to-order omelets). Non-balloon honeymooners start with a 6am game drive and breakfast en route. Spend the full day exploring the Mara's most rewarding zones — the Mara Triangle's cheetahs, the Talek River's hippo pods, the BBC-Big-Cat-Diary marsh area where the Marsh Pride still rules. Picnic lunch in the bush, then a long afternoon game drive in different sectors. Tonight your driver-guide arranges a private candlelit bush dinner — table set in a clearing with hurricane lamps, a personal chef, and the entire savanna as your dining room. Return to the lodge by 9pm.

  3. 3

    Final Mara day

    Maasai Mara

A 6am sunrise game drive in different sectors of the Mara from previous days — likely the Sand River area in the south-east (where the migration enters from Tanzania), the Lookout Hill plains (vast wildebeest concentrations July–October), and the boundary with the Mara North Conservancy (where vehicle traffic is lighter and off-road driving is permitted). From July through October this is an excellent day for a Mara River crossing — your guide is in radio contact with other vehicles tracking herd movements. Return to the lodge at 11am for a long brunch, then the afternoon is yours — couples-massage at the lodge spa (pre-bookable), poolside reading, or simply each other. The afternoon game drive at 4pm is a final loop for whatever sighting most eluded you so far. Sundowner on a Mara hilltop with a glass of bubbles. Final lodge dinner.

Bush to beach in a single day

Maasai Mara → Nairobi → Mombasa → Diani Beach

After breakfast and one final lodge swim, you're transferred to the Mara airstrip for an 11am SafariLink flight back to Wilson Airport in Nairobi (45 minutes). On arrival you transfer 20 minutes across the city to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for a 2:30pm Kenya Airways or Jambojet flight to Moi International Airport, Mombasa (1-hour direct, snack service onboard). Met on arrival in Mombasa, you drive 1 hour south down the coast across the Likoni ferry to Diani Beach — Kenya's south coast, a 17km strip of powder-white sand and turquoise water that consistently wins Africa's-Best-Beach awards. Check into your honeymoon suite by 5pm, dinner at the resort with feet in the sand. The transition from bush to beach in a single day is dramatic — but that's exactly the contrast that makes this itinerary unforgettable.

  5. 5

Wasini Island and Kisite Marine Park

Diani Beach → Wasini Island day trip

An early start (7:30am pickup) for the 1.5-hour drive south down the coast to Shimoni — the historic dhow port where you board a traditional sailing dhow for the day. The morning sail is a slow drift toward Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park, a protected coral atoll where pods of bottlenose and humpback dolphins ride the dhow's bow wave on most trips. Anchor in the marine park for two hours of snorkeling among technicolor reef fish, green sea turtles and (if lucky) reef sharks. Lunch is on Wasini Island itself at the famous Charlie Claw's restaurant — fresh-caught crab cooked in coconut, grilled prawns, fish curry, fruit platter. An afternoon walking tour of the Wasini coral garden boardwalk before the dhow sails you back to Shimoni at sunset. Return to the resort by 7pm, late dinner on the beach.

  6. 6

Diani — your day, your way

    Diani Beach

A completely free day at the resort — sleep in, breakfast on the beach, swim in the Indian Ocean (the reef offshore takes the surf, leaving absolutely calm swimming water at the shoreline). Optional add-ons available through the resort: couples massage at the spa (US$120 per couple, 90 minutes), a kitesurfing lesson at Galu Beach (Diani is one of Africa's best kitesurfing destinations), a colobus monkey sanctuary visit, or a deep-sea fishing charter. Late afternoon, board a private sundowner dhow cruise (just the two of you, US$280 upgrade from the group dhow) — sailing along the Diani coast, dolphins riding the bow if conditions are right, the sun sinking pink behind the African mainland. Land at the resort for a candlelit beach dinner — table set on the sand, hurricane lamps, a personal waiter, a five-course menu of Swahili cuisine. Your honeymoon photograph.

  7. 7

    Departure

    Diani → Mombasa → home

A free morning at the resort — one last beach swim, late breakfast, an unhurried packing of damp swimsuits and salt-crusted sandals into your luggage. Late check-out at noon (pre-bookable) lets you stay on the beach until midday. Transfer to Moi International Airport, Mombasa is 1 hour via the Likoni ferry. Most international flights to Europe, the Middle East and the Gulf depart Mombasa in the afternoon or evening; alternatively connect through Nairobi (hourly flights with Kenya Airways and Jambojet) to your onward international service. End of safari. Asante sana, kwaheri — thank you very much, goodbye. Most of our honeymoon couples come back for a 10th-anniversary trip; we hope to host you again.
