Kenya · Departing Kisumu
5 Days Maasai Mara, Lake Victoria & Ruma Safari from Kisumu
Overview
A more comprehensive western Kenya safari that pairs the Maasai Mara with two of the region's least-visited but most rewarding destinations — Lake Victoria and Ruma National Park. Five days, four nights, departing and returning to Kisumu.
You start with two full days in the Mara Triangle (entering via the western Oloololo Gate from Kisumu — a much shorter drive than from Nairobi). The third day is on Lake Victoria, exploring the Kisumu Impala Sanctuary, the Dunga Beach fishing village, and a small-boat trip among the hippos and birdlife of Africa's largest lake. The fourth day is at Ruma National Park, Kenya's only sanctuary for the rare roan antelope — a 120-square-kilometre park in the Lambwe Valley between the Kanyamaa escarpment and Lake Victoria, supporting Rothschild's giraffe, Jackson's hartebeest, leopard and the largest concentration of roan antelope in East Africa.
Few safari operators include Ruma — you will likely have the park almost entirely to yourselves. Perfect for birders, off-the-beaten-track travelers and second-time visitors.

Kisumu → Maasai Mara (Mara Triangle)
Kisumu → Maasai Mara
Collect from your Kisumu hotel or Kisumu International Airport after breakfast for the five-hour drive south through the sugarcane country of western Kenya, across the Mau escarpment, and into Maasai country. This route is significantly shorter than the standard Nairobi-Mara drive — Kisumu sits just three hundred kilometres from the Mara's western (Mara Triangle) gate. Lunch en route. Arrive at your safari camp on the western side of the reserve by mid-afternoon, in time for a long game drive through the Mara Triangle — the wildlife-rich, less-visited western third of the reserve managed by the Mara Conservancy. Dinner around the fire and overnight at your camp.

Maasai Mara — Full day game drives
Maasai Mara
Today belongs to the Mara. After early coffee, head out at 6am for the dawn game drive when the big cats are still hunting — the diamond hours when leopards descend from sausage trees and lions finish their kills. You return to the lodge around 10am for a full breakfast and a few hours of leisure: swimming pool, spa treatment, a lazy verandah read or laundry turnaround. After lunch, set out again at 4pm for the golden-hour drive. Between July and October your guide will track radio reports of wildebeest crossings at the Mara River, where Nile crocodiles wait — one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles on Earth. An optional sunrise hot-air balloon safari can be arranged at $450 per person, ending with a champagne bush breakfast cooked beside your landing site. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Maasai Mara → Kisumu (Lake Victoria)
Maasai Mara → Kisumu
After breakfast, a full day exploring Lake Victoria — Africa's largest lake and the source of the White Nile. Visit the Kisumu Impala Sanctuary on the lakeshore, then continue to the Hippo Point and Dunga Beach fishing village, where wooden fishing boats are hand-built and the daily Nile perch catch is unloaded each evening. Take a small boat out into the lake to see hippos, monitor lizards, fish eagles and the unique birdlife of the papyrus shores. Lunch at a lakeside restaurant — fresh tilapia and ugali. Afternoon visit to the Kit Mikayi rock formation, a sacred Luo cultural site. Return to your Kisumu hotel for sunset over the lake — one of the most beautiful sunsets in Kenya.

Kisumu → Ruma National Park
Kisumu → Ruma
Drive south from Kisumu (or your western Kenya base) to Ruma National Park — Kenya's only sanctuary for the rare roan antelope and one of the country's least-visited parks. The 120-square-kilometre park sits in the Lambwe Valley between the Kanyamaa escarpment and Lake Victoria, and supports Rothschild's giraffe, Jackson's hartebeest, leopard, hyena, oribi and the largest concentration of roan antelope in East Africa. A morning game drive across the open plains, picnic lunch under a fig tree, and an afternoon drive along the escarpment with views to the lake. Few safari operators include Ruma — you will likely have the park almost entirely to yourselves. Return to your western Kenya lodge for dinner.

Ruma → Kisumu
Ruma → Kisumu
Breakfast and a final short Mara game drive en route out of the reserve — last chances for cheetah cubs, hippo pods and elephant herds at the river. Around 10am you begin the drive back to Nairobi, stopping at a roadside curio market where Maasai women sell beaded jewellery, hand-carved soapstone and wood. A hot lunch is served at a highland restaurant overlooking the Rift Valley before the final stretch through tea-country green to the city. You arrive in Nairobi between 4pm and 5pm. We can drop you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for international flights, transfer you to Wilson Airport for a Mombasa or Zanzibar coastal extension, or back at your Nairobi hotel. End of safari — but very much, we hope, the start of a lifelong love of East Africa.
